Summer Concert - Parisian Summer

Saturday 5th July 2014 at St Michael's Church, Madeley

The Summer Concert was John Murton's last as the orchestra's conductor, as he is taking  up a scholarship to study a Masters in orchestral conducting at the University of Cincinnati.

The programme was

  Haydn Symphony No.86
  Debussy Petite Suite
  Ryan Yard Descent (new commission)
  Fauré Pavane
Ravel Pavane pour une infante défunte
Mozart Symphony in D Major - "Paris Symphony"

John became the orchestra’s conductor in 2011 and gave his guidance and encouragement for three years.

Members responded well to his professional approach and emphasis on musicianship during rehearsals. A key emphasis was to build the quality of the orchestra's ensemble playing.

He  devised interesting and innovative concert programmes, including a performance of music with the spoken word, and three new works commissioned for the orchestra. He also helped the orchestra celebrate its 150th anniversary year in style, including an open weekend workshop for musicians and singers followed by an exhilarating performance of Beethoven’s Choral Symphony.

Ryan Yard - composer of "Descent"

Ryan Yard is an established local composer who has had works played by major orchestra including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. His music is lyrical and draws on the colours of the orchestra.

For the summer concert he composed "Descent", a piece that explores the contrast between light and dark. The piece uses melodic lines which unfold slowly across a range of solo instruments before dissolving almost into silence at the end.

Spring Concert - "Power and Reformation"

March 29th 2014 at The Edge, Much Wenlock

The spring concert featured two major works. The first was a performance of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.5, the Emperor with talented young soloist Jacob Baker.

The other major work was Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5 in D, the Reformation.

The concert was at The Edge, Much Wenlock, which is a first for the orchestra and proved to be an excellent venue.

The full programme was:

Beethoven - Coriolan Overture
Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat  -
Emperor Concerto
Mendelssohn - Hebrides Overture -
Fingal's Cave

Summer Concert

This year's summer concert combined well-established repertoire with music that is completely new. The first half of the programme had an Eastern European Nationalist flavour, featuring Bartok's Rumanian Folk Dances and Dvorak's Czech Suite and Serenade in D minor for wind instruments, cello and double bass.

The second half started with an exciting new composition - Three Pieces from Jazz - by Ninfea Cruttwell-Reade (pictured here).

Ninfea is a professional cellist and composer. Her  music includes large scale choral works, music for theatre, and works for cello including Picasso's Harlequin for cello and electronics.

Three Pieces from Jazz is a slightly more traditional work for full orchestra based upon paintings by Henri Matisse.

The concert included a talk about the work by the composer.

The final work was Haydn's Symphony No.99 in Eb major - the seventh of his twelve London Symphonies.

Spring Concert:     "Romance and Revolution"
Saturday 16th March

The first concert of the year brought together two of the best-known and best-loved works in the repertoire — Dvorak's Cello Concerto and Beethoven's Third Symphony (The Eroica) and coupled them with a less well know work, Armas Järnefelt's Präludium.

The Dvorak Cello Concert was played by Daniel Burrowes. Dan comes from a family of professional cellists and his burgeoning career has seen him play orchestral and chamber music in places as diverse as Dallas and Chennai, as well as London's West End — in the Phantom of the Opera.

The full programme was

Armas Järnefelt: Präludium
Dvorak: Cello Concerto in B minor, Op.104
Soloist Daniel Burrowes
Beethoven: Symphony No.3 in E¨ major, Op.55 ('Eroica')
